HISTORY: Aya Hasegawa is the father of his only daughter, Tara Hasegawa. He's also long time friends with Diane Tsukino and Sugoroku Motou as well. He’s known them for at ten three years. But he and Sugoroku Motou have been good close friends since he is his assistant when going on archeological digs with him from time to time, if he’s not too busy teaching at Daruma University as a professor, to go. Sugoroku introduced Aya to Diane, and they hit it off as friends in Diane’s opinion, but to him, he’d fallen in love with her but was aware that she’d fallen for Gozaburo Kaiba. He knew she wasn’t the type of woman who was after money, but a part of him was confused as to what she saw in Gozaburo.
But he never asked, or rather, he chose not to pry out of respect. Instead, Aya got married to Tara's mother, Tomomi. However, she had died from Leukemia, leaving Aya alone to take care of their daughter. He adores his daughter and prays the same thing doesn't happen to Tara. But unlike the average paranoid parent, he doesn't force Tara to do frequent medical check-ups, which would be redundant since things can't be seen at first glance until one is older. So, he makes sure she at least eats healthily, but otherwise allows Tara to be a normal little girl. Tomomi's last words to Aya were telling him it was okay for him to move on and create a life with their daughter. She wants them both to be happy and loved. As a person, Aya is sort of absent-minded as he tends to be forgetful. He can also be clumsy as well, and it results in him sometimes being kicked by his daughter or smacked by Diane for it.
He sometimes says things without realizing they could be deemed as inappropriate to others, and this also gets him smacked. As for his relationship with Diane, she does reach out to him when she comes to Domino, Japan. She wants to leave because of personal reasons that Aya is aware of. He knows she's a Sailor Guardian. He may not understand her role as one, but he is aware she is one. He gives her honest advice that he knows she won't take because she believes she's protecting herself and her family. However, he tries to warn her that there's nothing wrong with protecting her family, but she can't keep secrets from them that will hurt them emotionally. She needs to tell them the truth about her relationship with Gozaburo and the child the two of them hand tohgether. Aya's role is minimal and only shows up when extra hands are needed or comedic relief.
He still has feelings for Diane, and when he sees her again, he tells her that. He doesn't get a response from her until the end of the story, after the Battle City Tournament. He does attend the tournament with Diane, who is there to be supportive, but really, she wants to keep her daughter Jasmine away from Seto. Aya doesn't play a part in the Virtual World part of the story, but Diane does, and when she comes to him crying, he knows right then that everything is out and comforts her. He returns to Domino after the Battle City Tournament and tries to help Diane work through making amends with her daughters, which does happen at the end of the story. He also receives an answer from Diane, starting with her thanking him for being there for him, but willing to consider a relationship with him. Maybe not marriage, but definitely considering the idea of dating.
