IS THIS CHARACTER AN NPC?: Yes, Ryuji only shows up around the Battle City Tournament. However, depending on how the story is eventually rewritten, this may change, and he may stay longer. For now, his role only begins and ends when the tournament ends.

PERSONALITY: Ryuji is street-smart and laid back. An expert with the dice, he enjoyed impressing girls with his dice tricks. He also knew about Yuugi and him beating Pegasus, and was determined to prove that Yuugi didn't rightfully defeat Pegasus, whom he viewed as an idol. After Yuugi beat him at Dungeon Dice Monsters, Ryuji softened and became good friends with Yuugi and the others, and was sorry that he saw Yuugi as a cheater. From then on, Ryuji became an ally to the group and would help them out whenever needed. Ryuji also points out the obvious signs of any Duel, albeit the negative parts. He is also shown to be a skilled hacker.

APPEARANCE: Duke has black hair, which he has tied up in a ponytail and a black and red headband. He has a black shirt with a red vest, black pants, and brown shoes. He wears a single dice earring, a sword necklace, and gold bands on his arms. He attended Domino High School in the past, wearing the required boys' uniform, which is a blue jacket and blue pants, with brown suede shoes. He wore a black shirt underneath his uniform jacket. He no longer wears the uniform because he graduated early.

HISTORY: Ryuji Otogi is the owner of the Black Crown Game Shop. He first met Yuugi and the others at Domino High School, but this was temporary because he wanted revenge against Yuugi who defeated Pegasus J. Crawford. He didn't believe someone like him could've defeated the creator of Duel Monsters. He drew in the attention of Jonouchi who felt he was showing off, and from there he invited Jonouchi and his friends because he wanted to get to Yuugi originally. The duel between Ryuji and Jonouchi ended in Ryuji winning and Jonouchi being forced to become his servant. Yuugi disliked the treatment of his friend and challenged Ryuji to a duel for Jonouchi to be released.

Ryuji was amused, yet agreed, but instead of dueling, he wanted to beat Yuugi at the game he created which was Dungeon Dice Monsters. Yuugi won the game in the in, free Jonouchi and Ryuji apologized to Yuugi and his friends for how he treated them. From that day forward, he became friends with them. He didn't return to Domino High, graduating early so he could focus on running his game shop. Ryuji appears in the story when he comes across Honda, Makoto, and Shizuka when they were being attacked by Rare Hunters. He was able to help the three of them out. Before they ran into Mai Kujaku, Ryuji had asked who Makoto and Shizuka were when they were hiding since he'd never met them before. He only knew about Honda and his other friends. He told him that Makoto was his girlfriend and Shizuka was Jonouchi's younger sister.

Before their conversation could continue, Shizuka was the one who stated they should quickly find the others. Makoto agreed, while adding that if the Rare Hunters were after them, chances are they were after the others as well. The Rare Hunters should up again, and Ryuji made sure to get the girls away while Honda took care of them. Just then, Ryuji, Makoto, and Shizuka ran into Mai and she went to get him once Honda was done beating up the Rare Hunters to find out why they were after them and what was going on. Honda told them to head to the Domino Pier where they would find Yuugi and the others. So, that is where Mai took them. When they got there, they stumbled upon a brainwashed Jonouchi dueling against Yuugi along with Anzu being held captive as well. The duel ended somehow in a draw, with everyone getting out alive with no one getting hurt.

Ryuji decides to stick around to watch his friends in the Battle City Finals where they all came face to face with Malik Ishtar, the man who was behind all of the crazy things going on and the group of Rare Hunters targeting them. Ryuji's involvement is him cheering on Yuugi and Jonouchi and helping them when they got trap in Noa Kaiba's virtual world. He was amazed at how well the dueling skills of Yuugi and Jonouchi had gotten. It made him a little envious, but in a good way. They were making a name for themselves, just as he did with his own creation. The tournament ended with Yuugi managing to defeat Malik. When they all returned to Domino, Ryuji bid farewell to everyone while telling them that who knows, he may start a small tournament of his own for them to join. Look out for it.

SIDE NOTE: Originally, Ryuji was supposed to have developed a crush on Jonouchi's sister, Shizuka while fighting over her with Honda. However, because Honda is dating Makoto int he story and Shizuka is fourteen years old in the story, it would be inappropriate to write Ryuji pining for a fourteen year old. So, the alternative is to have him be helpful, but not weirdly drooling over Shizuka.
